A native of Yokohama, Japan, Marcos Fernandes spent over three decades in California as performer, producer and curator. He has performed in the US, Canada, Mexico, Portugal, Hong Kong and Japan as a solo improviser, phonographer and as percussionist/sound artist with various ensembles, dancers, poets and visual artists. Fernandes' work can be heard on over 50 recordings on Accretions, Bake/Staalplaat, Circumvention, Cobra Discos, Disk Union, Enban, Less Than TV, Pax, Public Eyesore, Titicacaman and others. His current projects include The Argonauts, TNBT, Uoichi, Melt, The Metaphors, Wabi Sabi Club and The Tokyo Phonographers Union.

Fernandes has performed and/or recorded with Bernhard Gal, Bill Horist, Carl Stone, Chris DeLaurenti, George Lewis, Gianni Gebbia, Haco, Hans Fjellestad, K.K.Null, Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Kazuo Imai, Lê Quan Ninh, Lisle Ellis, Mike Keneally, Miya Masaoka, Seiichi Yamamoto, Tetuzi Akiyama, Thomas Dimuzio, Yuji Katsui, Yuki Saga, Yuko Hirai, Yumiko Tanaka as well as with Donkey, Lower Left Performance Collective, Nortec Collective, Seattle Phonographers Union and Skeleton Key Orchestra.

Fernandes has participated in various festivals including Sengawa Jazz, LandFes, Jazztreffen 2015 (Tokyo), Festival Beyond Innocence (Osaka), Impromusica Fes, Jazz Promenade (Yokohama), T(h)ree vol.3, Manpower 2014 (Lisbon), so.cal.sonic, Sound walk (Long Beach), Chicago Calling, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, San Francisco Alternative Music Festival, Edgetone Music Summit (Bay Area), Big Sur Experimental Music Festival, Oakland Sound/Shift, Olympia Festival of Experimental Music and the Northwest Electroacoustic Music Festival. He has appeared at Spruce Street Forum, Museum of Contemporary Art, CRCA/UCSD, Sushi Performance Gallery (San Diego), CECUT, Don Loope (Tijuana), Jazzorca (Mexico City), Open Gate, Il Corral/Zero Point, Dangerous Curve, Club Tropical, Line Space Line, KXLU (Los Angeles), Fringe Gallery (Hong Kong), Luggage Store, 21 Grand, KFJC (Bay Area), Polestar, COCA, Sonarchy Radio/Jack Straw (Seattle), Red Room (Baltimore), The Stone (NYC), BankArt, Gorthe Institut, Museum of Kyoto, Renaiss Hall, International House, Pit Inn, Super Deluxe, Airegin, Bridge, Urban Guild, Tokuzo (Japan) among others.

While in San Diego, Fernandes was co-director of Spring Reverb 2003-2008 held at sites including the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Making Music, and has curated events at numerous venues including Spruce Street Forum, Casbah, Galoka, Kava Gallery, the Space and Voz Alta. From 1993 to 1996, Fernandes curated weekly performances and presented concerts at the Wikiup Cafe and Intersection Gallery, an alternative visual and performing arts space. In Japan, Fernandes has curated several events including Koganecho Happening, a bi-monthly multi-media concert series held at Shichoushitsu 2 in Yokohama, Port of call, Possible Spaces, a forum for phonography-based works, Percussion Sound/Shift, World Listening Day and Sounding the Space. Fernandes is a recipient of grants from Meet the Composer, Arts Commission Yokohama and the City of Matsue.

Fernandes co-runs the artist-based independent label Accretions,home to some of today's more innovative experimentalists. He was a founding member of the Trummerflora collective, dedicated to creative music in Southern California.
